Adoption of Modular Construction in the Building Sector of Developing Countries: An Implementation Framework

According to the United Nations report, around 1.6 billion people worldwide lack adequate housing and as per experts' prediction, this number could rise to 3 billion by 2030. To meet the current demand for rapid population growth the world needs to build 96,000 new homes which are affordable and sustainable. Due to the lack of construction speed due to weather delays and Labor shortages, traditional construction methods are not meeting the current demand for housing and infrastructure. Modular construction (MC) is an advanced method of construction where the building components or modules are manufactured in a controlled factory setting and then transported to the job site for assembly. The purpose of the research is to develop an adoption model tailored to the low-rise building industry of developing countries to help overcome the key barriers to the adoption of MC methods.

By developing an adoption model to overcome barriers to MC methods adoption, the research will provide a fresh perspective and valuable insights into the field of MC. The study will help policymakers and AEC professionals to develop effective policies to overcome the obstacles related to the pressing problem of housing shortages in the low-rise building sector of developing countries.
