Stage 2 - A national study of education concert designs: A view to share the music

This survey comprises STAGE 2 of the project
'A national study of education concert designs: A view to share the music'

Harnessing the artistic-pedagogical knowledge used to design concerts for children can enable more Australian orchestras, such as community orchestras, to engage wider audiences. However, this teaching-artistry is held as tacit knowledge by practitioners and industry with emergent international research. As such, this timely project collaborates with industry and teaching-artists to support future dialogue, and spark new creative projects. Sharing these advances in knowledge will make what is implicit explicit, transform the design of impactful concerts, enhance audience engagement and learning, and inform future international research.

Welcome and thank you for all the work you do in providing young Australians with amazing opportunities to enjoy orchestral music. We are so grateful that you have decided to join the research project by sharing your work and ideas.

Here’s an overview of what types of questions to expect:

  • Tell us about you  Your professional background including qualifications, experience, and sources of professional development.
  • The work you do – Tell us about the tasks and fantastic work you do specifically related to concerts and events for children and young people.
  • What you think – Share with us your opinions and beliefs about what make for successful, meaningful, and worthwhile concerts and learning experiences for children and young people.
  • How you do what you do – This is an interesting one! The researchers want to get a sense of what specific knowledge and skills you use, and think are essential when planning, designing, producing, and performing concerts and events for children and young people.
  • What’s next? – An invitation to participate in Stage 3 of the research project by providing your work contact email and phone number.

Time
It is recommended that you set aside approximately 25 minutes to complete the survey.

The survey will frequently refer to:

  • Children and young people – The data we are interested in relates to events when children (0 to 5 years of age), school aged children and adolescents (6-19 years of age) are the in the audience. This might also include events for families, multi-age concerts and events specialised for children and young people with disabilities. The key is children, adolescents and families must be the target audience and that the event is designed with them in mind.
  • Planning, designing, and producing – This includes any work that ‘helps make concerts, events and projects happen’ and all the lead up work that takes place. Other words that may be useful include ‘curating’ and ‘creating’.
  • Presenting – This includes ‘performing’, ‘facilitating’ and all the tasks that happen during the actual concert/event that the audience are engaged in.
  • Concerts, events, and projects – Lots of options really.

In short, there’s a lot that goes into creating wonderful events for audiences and the language used here is an attempt to capture this. As such, defining this thoughtful and intentional work is part of what this research is trying to do. Please interpret these terms in the guise of the specific work you do.
