The safety of young people online in this increasingly digital world is a concern on a global scale. With a stronger focus on digital literacy, including eSafety, the most recent version of the Australian Curriculum (V9) was just released. The ICT General Capabilities have actually been replaced by the Digital Literacy General Capabilities.
It is therefore the responsibility of all educators to promote safety in two ways:
* first, by teaching students critical thinking skills for online interaction, and
* second, by exercising caution when interacting online.
In this project, we aim to increase educators' knowledge of eSafety through research publications and test the creation of a tool that teaches students to recognise issues on various online platforms. This tool will focus on being inclusive to all students in the classroom through a focus on accessible design.
The Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration (2019) outlines equity and excellence for all students, which is in line with this. Knowledge from this study will aid in the creation of an accessible tool that will be used to spot warning signs (red flags) in online settings that are meant to keep kids safe.
