Intimate Partner Violence is defined as physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse and/ or coercive control inflicted upon an individual by a current or former intimate partner (Sardinha et al, 2022). Coercive control is defined as a pattern of controlling behaviour that is ongoing, repetitive, and cumulative in nature, used by a perpetrator to establish and maintain control over another person. Examples of this behaviour can include but are not limited to: isolation from family and friends, gaslighting, name-calling, financial control, restricted autonomy, jealousy and threats of violence for non-capitulation (ANROWS, 2021; Cortis & Bullen, 2015).
